In the near future, much of the burden of fighting geese will be shifted to farmers. Recreational goose hunting continues, as anyone can hunt geese without the need for a hunting license. Commerce will monitor arrangements developed by the agricultural community with other groups interested in geese (including recreational hunting groups, municipal councils and airport corporations) with a particular interest in aviation safety issues. If significant „problematic” issues arise, Commerce will bring them to the attention of the Minister of Nature Conservancy. An environmental officer found the suspected shooter, who said geese were chasing him while he was working on his property. The officer reminded the man of the goose laws and issued him with two tickets for taking waterfowl out of the open season and taking migratory birds with him, contrary to the CED regulation. Due to his injuries, a goose was killed and removed from the pond. In some parts of the country, no major changes are required. Landowners and others who need to control geese have the opportunity to conduct the inspection themselves or contact local recreational hunters interested in goose hunting opportunities. Goose hunters can also contact local farmers to access hunting opportunities.

Nevertheless, the Canadian goose population continues to grow rapidly. According to the Canadian government website, there are about seven million geese in North America. A recent CBC article points out that the Canada geese population in the city (3500 and growing) is spiraling out of control and that the Vancouver Parks Commission is taking action with its Canada goose management plan. But Canada geese have not always been a nuisance to our city. They were once almost an endangered species, but in the 1970s birds were reintroduced to the city to increase the population for hunting and consumption. People who were humans and wanted to be around the animals began to feed the geese, which made the birds with crowded areas more comfortable and, in turn, better able to lay eggs. The overcrowding and domestication of geese in our bustling city makes the brew precarious, as many people in Vancouver have had the experience of being chased, whistled or harassed by a goose. Anyone can hunt or kill geese at any time of the year without the need for a hunting license. Permits are no longer required for the control of geese on private land. Hunters who want to hunt geese in nature reserves need a hunting license, but no more game. Find out more about hunting licences.

A potential need for regulation to ensure effective management of geese has already been brought to the attention of the government. These could include restrictions on the use of aircraft to control geese (which birds can learn to avoid) or a ban on the use of lead shot when hunting geese over waterways (with possible exemptions for certain areas such as Molesworth). The DOC, in consultation with the various stakeholders, will monitor the need for regulation as the situation evolves in the different areas. Ministers will be able to guide management policy as needed, which they could not do under the previous regime. SUMMIT, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is reminding residents that it is illegal to kill geese outside of the Canadian goose hunting season or without a permit. In 2021, the hunting season was in September. The recall comes after the DEC received a report on May 5 about shots fired at geese at a pond in Summit, Schoharie County. The complainant testified that she saw a man drive to the pond, get out of his vehicle, shoot a goose once, and then the other geese in the pond a second time.

To reduce the birth rate, the Vancouver Park Board bans feeding geese and sterilizes eggs through so-called „egg addition”: a practice that has been in place since the 90s and endorsed by other wildlife and animal welfare groups. Civilians are not legally allowed to kill these geese, but municipal officials are. To reduce the birth rate, the Vancouver Park Board bans feeding geese and sterilizes eggs through so-called „egg addition”: a practice that has been in place since the 90s and endorsed by other wildlife and animal welfare groups. Adding eggs means freezing, shaking or covering eggs with oil shortly after laying to sterilize them. However, geese got used to the city plan and began to better hide their nests from parks and private houses, which can cause property damage. The city is now asking the public to contact the park administration if nests are found so they can be treated properly. Given the temperate climate of our city and the lack of natural enemies for geese, it seems that they will not go anywhere anytime soon (except for migration).
